Beekeeping Devices, Tools and Techniques

In the process of keeping bees one develops a need for something that does something that doesn't seem to be available commercially.  The following are things that we've developed here on the farm to help us accomplish our mission.

Honey Hefter  - Ever wondered how much honey is really in those supers; do I need to add another?  Have the bees enough winter stores; can I stop feeding?  The honey hefter is a quick and inexpensive way to weigh a hive or stack of supers (or lots of other things for that matter).

Screened Bottom Board (SBB) Pallets - Numerous companies market screened bottom boards for single hives.  Many authors have written about the benefits of SBB as part of an IPM program. We wanted a simple cheap pallet with SBB and a method of closing the bottom for the winter.  We've used these successfully for several years; our design is described.

Pail and Bottle Warmer - Like many others, we've converted a broken freezer to gently warm up to 6 five gallon pails at a time.  The sturdy shelves and size of the commercial freezer make it much more suitable to warming honey than the common chest freezer.

Dual Drum Warmer - Raw honey will sugar and anyone who stores his honey in 55 gallon drums has the problem of making it liquid again.  This drum warmer, suspended from the ceiling, takes up no space, is an order of magnitude less expensive than a warm room and is gentle on the honey.
