The Apple Orchard
Why? Michigan is a large and excellent apple producing state. I like apples. What could be easier than planting a few trees and enjoying the fruits of the harvest each fall?!? The problem has been that the deer like the apples too. I wouldn't mind sharing the apples but the deer prune the trees all season so much that they suffer mightily from 'failure to thrive' syndrome.
So, our latest effort (the fall of 2004) has been to fence the deer out. This (with the normal number of setbacks) has been accomplished. Unfortunately, the deer just snuk through the fence. In 2006 we added orange snow fence to the lower wires. At last, success!! 2007 saw several bushels of apples and almost no deer activity. We're looking forward to a bumper crop in 2008 and the new trees finally have a chance. |
